- Descrição
- Recent observation of Proton Magnetic Resonance inferromagnetic <math>\beta\,\!</math> -Uranium Hydride by Barash et al. led us to perform a new analysis of the specific heat data of Flotow and Osborne for this compound. In the temperature region 1.469 K <math>\le</math> T <math>\le</math> 3.927 K, the specific heat C was found to be given by the expression C = 29.504 T + 0.099 <math>T^3\,\!</math> mJ <math>K^{-1}\,\!</math> <math>mol^{-1}\,\!</math> while, for 4:332 K <math>\le</math> T<math>\le</math> 15.184 K, C = 28.464 T + 0.157 <math>T^3\,\!</math> + 55.906 + <math>[T^{3/2}+ {4 \over 5} T_o T^{1/2}+ {4 \over 15}T^2_o T^{-1/2}].</math> exp <math>(-T_o/T)\,\!</math> in the same units, with, <math>T_o\,\!</math> = 79.3 K. This result in dicates that the dispersion relation for magnons in this compound has the form <math>E = k_BT_o + Dk^2\,\!</math>. The large energy gap <math>(k_BT_o)\,\!</math> is attributed to the high magneto crystalline anisotropy arising from the unquenched orbital moment of the uranium ions. To our knowledge this is the first energy gap reported for magnons in an actinide compound.
