- The self-consistent Hamiltonian formulation of the scalar field theory on the light-front, which contains also a constraint equation, is constructed and compared with the equal-time formulation. In two dimensions the mass renormalization condition and the renormalized constraint equation contain all the information to describe the phase transition in the <math> \phi^4 \,\!</math> theory, which is found to be of the second order.
