The novelty in thecreationoftheLatin American Physics Center wasthediplomaticcharactergivento it from its inception. Wealsodescribethefirstyearsofthe establishment andconsolidationofthisbody, whichoccurredsimultaneouslywiththe 1964 military coup in Brazil, the country where its headquarterswere (and still are) located.
