<dd>Nuclear quadrupole resonances of &lt;math&gt;Cu^{63}\,\!&lt;/math&gt; and &lt;math&gt;Fe^{57}\,\!&lt;/math&gt; Mössbauer spectroscopy of the high temperature superconductor &lt;math&gt;YBa_2Cu_30_{7-\gamma}\,\!&lt;/math&gt; are described together with synchrotron radiation studies of the copper oxidation states in this material. The Mössbauer spectra of &lt;math&gt;^{57}Fe\,\!&lt;/math&gt; in the two distinct crystallographic sites of the Cu atoms in &lt;math&gt;YBa_2Cu_30_{7-\gamma}\,\!&lt;/math&gt; are very similar from the quadrupole coupling point of view although exhibiting markedly different values for the isomer shift. The role of oxygen vacancies in the hyperfine interactions is discussed.</dd>
