Description
We have used a silicon microstrip vertex detector with the Tagged Photon Spectrometer to measure the lifetimes of charmed mesons produced by a high energy photon beam at Fermilab. The<math>D^+\,\!</math> lifetime, based on 969 <math> D^+ \rightarrow K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \,\!</math> decays, is measured to be (1.06 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .05 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .03) <math>\times 10^{-12}s \,\!</math> . Using 1360 <math>D^o\,\!</math> decays into the modes <math>K^- \pi^+ \,\!</math> and <math>K^- \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+\,\!</math>, we determine the lifetime to be (.435 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .015 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .010)<math>\times 10^{-12}s \,\!</math> . The ratio <math>\tau (D^+) / \tau (D^o)\,\!</math> obtained from these two measurements is (2.44 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .14 <math>\pm \,\!</math> .08).
