Description
Estimates are given for the half-lives of the radioactive decay of radium and radon isotopes by emission of <math>^{14}C\,\!</math> nuclei. The classical one-dimensional WKB approximation for penetration through a pure Coulomb barrier is used in the calculations. Results indicate that the naturally occurring radon isotopes are <math>^{14}C\,\!</math> emitters like their parents radium isotopes whose activities by emission of <math>^{14}C\,\!</math> nuclei have been recently measured. The predicted half-lives for decay of <math>^{219}Rn\,\!</math> , <math>^{220}Rn\,\!</math> and <math>^{222}Rn\,\!</math> by emission of <math>^{14}C\,\!</math> nuclei are in the range <math>10^{11}-10^{13}\,\!</math> yr. For radium and radon isotopes the minimum half life is obtained when the double-magic <math>^{208}Pb\,\!</math> and the semi-magic <math>^{206}Hg\,\!</math> are the daughter products, respectively, of these new radioactive decay modes.
