Description
We have searched for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay <math>(DCSD)\,\!</math> <math>D^{\pm} \rightarrow \phi K^{\pm}\,\!</math> and the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay <math> (SCSD)\,\!</math> <math>D^{\pm}_{s} \rightarrow \phi K^\pm\,\!</math> in data from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment <math>E691\,\!</math>. The <math>D^\pm\,\!</math> decay mode is of particular interest because it cannot result from simple spectator decay. We observe a <math>D^\pm\,\!</math> signal with a statistical significance of <math>3.3\,\!</math> standard deviations, corresponding to a branching ratio of <math>B(D^{\pm} \rightarrow \phi K^\pm)\,\!</math> <math> = (4.0^{+2.2}_{-1.8} \pm 0.6) \times10^{-4}.</math> In the <math>D^{\pm}_s\,\!</math> mode we measure an upper limit <math>B(D^{\pm}_s \rightarrow \phi K^{\pm}) < 0.17%\,\!</math>.
