Description
In the intermetallic compounds <math>YFe_2\,\!</math>, the magnetic hyperfine field at the <math>Y\,\!</math> nucleus, as measured by <math>^{89}Y\,\!</math> NMR spectroscopy, is affected by the substitution of one or more neighbor <math>Y\,\!</math> atom by different rare-earth impurities. In order to understand the underlying mechanisms for the transferred hyperfine interaction, we have performed first-principles calculations, within the local spin-density theory, for embedded clusters representing an <math>Y\,\!</math> atom and its vicinity in the compounds <math>Y_{1-x}R_{x}Fe_{2}\,\!</math> <math>(R = Gd, Tb, Ho, Tm \,\!</math> and <math>Lu)\,\!</math> and <math>Y_{1-x}Gd_{x}Ni_{2}\,\!</math> . The contact magnetic hyperfine field and the dipolar field were obtained; the resulting total field was found to increase with the spin of the rare-earth impurity. The contact transferred field was found to arise from direct polarization of the s-electrons by the rare-earth spin.
