Description
The alloying influences on the superconducting and the magnetic properties of the <math>(Gd_{x}Y_{1-x})Ni_{2}B_{2}C\,\!</math> series were studied. For <math>x < 0.25, T_c\,\!</math> is degraded linearly with <math>x\,\!</math> as expected from Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory. Magnetization and magnetoresistivity measurements on <math>x = 0.22\,\!</math> show that the magnetic saturation is not attained for field as high as <math>80\,\!</math> <math> kOe\,\!</math> implying that even for such a low Gd concentration, antiferromagnetic couplings are quite strong. On the other hand, the magnetic dilution in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet <math>GdNi_{2}B_{2}C\,\!</math> causes a linear depression of the magnetic ordering temperatures as expected from Molecular Field Theory. The abrupt quench of superconductivity for <math>x > 0.25\,\!</math> and the coexistence of superconductivity with the long range antiferromagnetic order for <math>0.1 < x < 0.25\,\!</math> are discussed.
