<dd>A historical overview is given of electronic structure calculations of the Mössbauer hyperfine parameters quadrupole splitting, isomer shift and magnetic hyperfine field in molecules and in solids, the latter represented by embedded clusters of atoms. Semi-empirical and first-principles methods based in Density Functional theory were employed. Results are related to characteristics of the chemical bonds.</dd>
