<dt>Description</dt>
<dd>We show that a large class of non-linear pure spin two field theories of gravity presents the phenomenon of birefringence. Such property of the gravitational waves is absent in General Relativity. Thus it can help to discriminate among all existing theories of gravity. Astrophysical and cosmological scenarios where gravitational waves interact with the gravitational field of a compact source are proposed for testing its occurrence in nature.</dd>
