<dd>Comemora-se este ano o centenário da descoberta do núcleo atômico, anunciada em Manchester (Inglaterra), no início de 1911, por seu descobridor sir Ernerst Rutherford. Este feito notável não representou apenas a inauguração de uma nova ciência, a Física Nuclear, mas constituiu-se no fundamento e na abertura do caminho para a compreensão da real estrutura dos átomos de que é feito tudo aquilo que está ao nosso redor, inclusive nós mesmos. É do núcleo atômico que emana toda a energia do Universo, e o desenvolvimento da ciência nuclear moderna nos tem feito saber que estão hoje catalogadas cerca de 3900 espécies nucleares distintas. O presente artigo, despretensioso e de leitura fácil, foi preparado dentro do espírito de celebração pelo centenário da descoberta do núcleo atômico, a qual deu início a uma grande revolução científica e tecnológica que vem proporcionando dias melhores para o homem da atualidade.</dd>
