- It is not possible to compactly review the overwhelming literature on
two-dimensional models in a meaningful way without a specific viewpoint; I
have therefore tacitly added to the above title the words ``as theoretical
laboratories for general quantum field theory''.
I dedicate this contribution to the memory of J. A. Swieca with whom I have
shared the passion of exploring 2-dimensional models for almost one decade.
A shortened version of this article is intended as a contribution to the
project ``Encyclopedia of mathematical physics'' and comments, suggestions and
critical remarks are welcome.
